Welcome to Sherwood Elementary! Principal Kessler

Our whole staff is glad to have your family here with us as we work together to create the foundations of life-long learning in every child. Learning is the most important thing that happens at Sherwood and we are proud to be a part of your child's education.

Sherwood is a community that nurtures the development of independent, life-long learners. Our vision statement embodies the philosophy of preparing Sherwood students for the world of the 21 st century. As our world continues to change, we know that students will need more than just the ability to take in and give back information. They will need to evaluate many sources of information, make complex decisions, work with people from all over the world, understand different cultures and cultural expectations, learn in different ways and use technology in order to learn, communicate with others and communicate their thinking.  Knowing how to learn will be an essential skill for all children. We want to prepare students for the ever complex world they will be entering, giving them the confidence and knowledge that they can learn anything, anytime, anywhere.

Part of preparing children for the world they will be entering is giving them the foundational academic skills to be successful. It is also important to teach children social and emotional skills in order for them to be successful in the world in which they will be growing into. We have three guidelines at Sherwood: Be Kind, Be Safe and Be a Learner. These guidelines allow children to reflect on all aspects of their behavior; not just taking their cues from a list of things not to do. Just like reading, writing and mathematics, behavior is something that is taught, and just as in other aspects of learning, mistakes are often made. We will guide children through problem solving processes, hold clear expectations of appropriate behavior and encourage children to reflect on both their successes and mistakes. We are committed to working with all children; to build on their strengths, facilitate new learning and understandings and support them in being successful as they continue to grow and learn.

We are glad you are here, joining us on this journey of growing and learning. Welcome to Sherwood!
